Top Law Schools

After receiving my last spring grade i finally know my complete gpa, with class rank to follow shortly. Prior to my last grade I had been deferred at Georgetown EA and had applied to GW. I go to a low tier 2 and have a 3.37 which is likely just inside the top 20 percent, one grade a B- in Con Law dropped me from just inside the top 10 percent at a 3.52. My other spring grades were A-, A-, A-. I was looking to transfer to schools like GW, Emory, W&M. I know GTown is out, but do you think there is a chance at being accepted at these schools or that it is even worth it to apply?

No harm in applying if you've got the $300

There is a big difference between top 20% and top 10%, from what I have heard and from the transfer database at the yahoo group, I will say you have a pretty good chance at all of them.

The money is debatable, I am sure it can find it somewhere.

Looking at the database I did see some students in the top 20 percent get in to all of these schools. I was just wondering if they were more the exception than the rule, although I realize that transfer cycles are unpredictable.

There are not enough students to judge whether they are the exception or the rule, but since there are a lot more students getting in than being rejected, my guess is that they are the rule. I'm positive you will get into at least of those schools. You may also want to look at other schools 17-30 ranked that also have large transfer classes.

Thanks for the response. Geographically those are the schools that make the most sense as I want to stay below the mason-dixon line. The Boston schools may be a possibility, just to expand the chance that I get into one school as I really want to transfer.

I think that if you want to go to a school like George Mason or Alabama you should apply to it. It is all really up to you. If you feel comfortable going to law school there, and if the school is fairly region (i.e., not in the top 20ish), then you should also consider the fact that you may be stuck there. I remember when I was applying to law schools I got in to random ass schools becuz of fee waivers like Iowa and Wisconsin, but I sure as hell knew that i was not going to be able to live in those places for 3 years, let alone 8, if i ended up getting stuck there.

I think you should print out the top 100, and highlight the schools you like, then narrow it down based on how much money you are willing to dish out to apply to all these schools. Transferring can be very unpredictable, but I hope you are able to gain admission in to one of the schools you want to go to. Best of luck.

I know people from t4's and t3's who have transferred that high with around top 15% gpas. So take that for what it is worth. Good luck, it's worth a shot and I, personally, think you will get in. Just a feeling.

As for a floor and ceiling... I would top it out with WUSTL and then pepper below that depending on money/location/interest. I could see WUSTL giving you a -shot-, but any high pretty much no chance.

Thanks for the optimistic advice, all I can do not is apply and hope I get into one of my three target schools: GW, W&M, and Emory.
