From what I have read on other forums, summer work may indeed be a factor in transferring. Numbers are important, but softs might just provide a boost if you are borderline. Top-5% might not be high enough depending on the school you would like to go to and where you would like to go.
If you have the internship in NYC, I am guessing you would like to transfer to a school in NYC like Columbia or NYU?

LOL... Not quite 3k/week, but upwards of (thanks to winning an NYC Bar Fellowship award).

*Edit* "Winning" makes it sound like some sort of lottery. Thanks to having been awarded an NYC Bar Fellowship (a program in which most of the top law firms in the City participate.. and so if you get a fellowship, you're paired with a top firm).

What about small law where you're being paid well?
