Top Law Schools

I have been admitted to several schools that run the gamut from Barely, Maybe not tier 1 (FSU), to bottom of Tier 2 (Pacific), to relatively strong T3 U. Balt...My dream is to go to Georgetown or UVA (I have a 160 LSAT 3.1 GPA Univ. of Maryland), so I obviously intend on transferring. However, I have some friends that are 1L's now that have warned me that transferring is 1- extremely difficult and 2- ruins any chance of law review, which in turn hurts your chances of hire post graduation. Is any of this true? Furthermore, is transferring worth it? I will be a JAG officer in the Marine Corps after graduation (life choice), but I do eventually want to do big law in a major city. Any suggestions, tips, etc...I am unwaveringly devoted to doing well in my 1L (I know that offers no guarantees), I just want to make sure it is worth it.

As an aside, I have heard UB has a great network in the Northeast, any one else heard good things?

Yeah, I really blew that one hard core. I bet some eager 0L transfer hopeful just gobbled that crap up.

I personally like the confidence, "I will be a JAG officer", I don't get why people think its so easy to do.

My thoughts (which you will likely find unhelpful):
1) Please don't go to FSU. You sound like a douche and a downer, and I don't want you at my school.
2) Regarding the bolded: uh...isn't it "worth it" no matter what?
3) @ the "retake" drones: the guy has a 3.0/160 - how much better can he realistically do? Bottom of the top tier?

Allright everyone no need to be assh*les about someone asking some questions.

Dude seriously though 160 and a 3.1 from Md. are not good numbers. If you are really bent on transferring, maybe take a year off, find some sort of meaningful, stand out from the crowd job, take an LSAT class and then retake the LSAT.

I know that UVa takes 90% of their transfers from in-state and the other 10% come from T20 schools, so unless you can figure out a way to become a Va. resident and go to one of the Va. schools (Mason or Richmond) I would move on from that dream.

UB has a "decent" reputation inside of Baltimore. That's it. Don't buy the hype that they sell on campus at College Park. If you try to go to DC people will probably be confused by where you say you went to law school. Maybe think about the PT program at Maryland's law school.

As an aside spend some time on this site. You will find lots of good info. and learn that asking questions like you did is a good way to have bitter overworked law students have some fun at your expense. Good luck and don't be shy about asking questions in the future despite this experience.

Even if he can "only" get to the bottom of the top tier, going to UMD rather than UB would be a much better option for the OP's goal of JAG - not that Maryland would guarantee it, but at least it would put it on the table. OP has a good shot at UMD with around a 168/169 and at least then the T2 schools would be throwing money at him/her.

EDIT: Just in case it's not clear, TCR is to retake.

If a 170+ on the LSAT is a possibility for you I would join in with the retake the LSAT as your best option crowd.
