Transferring to an equal rank school.

If you needed to transfer from one school to another who are similarly ranked for personal reasons, how hard would this be to do? Say you needed to transfer from Cornell to Georgetown. What class rank would you need roughly?

Check out transfer forum. To answer your question, probably between top quarter and top third. If Cornell to Georgetown was more than just a hypothetical example, Georgetown actually has a very large transfer class every year.

I've actually heard anecdotes of median grades being sufficient in these cases, so long as you have a legit reason for needing to transfer. Check out the yahoogroups transfer apps data base.

From reading posts on transferapps last transfer cycle, I seem to remember it being at least somewhat tied to how compelling of a reason you have-
"I want to go to a law school that starts with the letter 'G'"- probably need to be somewhat better than median (top 1/3 to 1/4 maybe?).
"I just got married and have a SO living in D.C., and need to take care of a sick family member"- median would be more likely to do it.
Pretty speculative on my part, but I would definitely check out transferapps for some more anecdotal evidence.
