Does applying first year help when trying to transfer later?

I am trying to decide if it's worth the extra $206 to apply to three schools I know my chances of getting in are somewhere between 1% and "nice try buddy". I am not going to go into a law school program with the #1 objective being to transfer out after my first year, but I do want the possibility to be as strong as possible. When applying to transfer, do law schools look at you in a better light if you had applied to start in their program originally and have now proven yourself through your first year's grades? Or should I just save my money to keep from donating to a school and having to pay again if indeed I do apply there as a trasfer the next year? Thanks in advance to anyone that can give me some help and insight. (and just for extra info the schools I am thinking of applying to are Univ of Miami, GA State, and Howard)
