Any chance any y'all are planning on going to the ASD in March? I'm hoping I might meet a potential roommate then, since I don't already know any 0L's (so far!).

I'm not sure yet which ASD I'll be going to (waiting on spring scheduling, but definitely going to one of them.ashdiamond wrote:Schlizzle, Bofas17, HeelsforHoos...

Seriously though, any female future cavaliers who might be looking for a roommate, feel free to PM me and we can discuss roommate stuff. Figure might as well start now, since I'm planing on visiting the apartments soon.

Will they pay for me to come to ASD? If I were them I'd pay for me.

Last year there was a stipend that was different amounts based on state of current residency. Essentially the farther away you are the more they give you. I came from TX and I got like $400.Doritos wrote:Will they pay for me to come to ASD? If I were them I'd pay for me.

No, it's a fixed amount stipend. They gave me $400, they didn't care how much it cost to get there. No receipts, just a fixed amount which you can choose to try to stay within or not.uvalaw2013 wrote:will they pay for transportation costs/hotel costs also (with recipts obviously)?vanwinkle wrote:Last year there was a stipend that was different amounts based on state of current residency. Also, you don't get the stipend payment until after you've visited. The purpose is to get you to visit, so I guess that makes sense, if you could get the money and then back out they'd be wasting money. You have to go to ASD and fill out a form verifying you showed up, and then they mail you the check afterward.

For those of you still debating where to live, I'm going to take this opportunity to comment on something. There are about 18 inches of snow covering everything outside right now, and it's incredibly handy to live where I do. I'm just a couple blocks from Harris Teeter and the shopping center (and what few stores are still actually open down there), and if school were still in session, I'm only a couple blocks from the law school, too. I can still walk anywhere I'd need to go, which is important since my car is buried under a foot of snow.
Food for thought, especially since I'm from Texas and never considered things like this before. It's just luck that I'm living in the best place for it right now. You can make that choice a little more consciously than I did.

If I were looking to buy a condo for my three years in Virginia, is there anything decent available in the immediate vicinity of the Law School?

won't it be cheaper if you get a place two-three weeks before schools start? One of my law school friends was telling me he got a 1br somewhere on ivy for like 500.00 a month.vanwinkle wrote:For those of you still debating where to live, I'm going to take this opportunity to comment on something. If you're being serious, Arlington Court Condominiums is just a block from the law school. However, you'd have to find one that's on the market, or start contacting owners to convince them it's worth it to put it on the market for you. I haven't exactly seen that many For Sale signs in this neighborhood, renting these things out is a cash cow for anyone who owns one.thepunisher24 wrote:If I were looking to buy a condo for my three years in Virginia, is there anything decent available in the immediate vicinity of the Law School?

I moved in here 2 weeks before classes started... I was just commenting on location and how it can be important to consider for when winter hits this part of the country.uvalaw2013 wrote:won't it be cheaper if you get a place two-three weeks before schools start? Being dead serious here, but I hear your point that it might be hard to find one available. I haven't done any research on the housing market in the area, but I'd consider it for investment purposes myself.vanwinkle wrote:If you're being serious, Arlington Court Condominiums is just a block from the law school. If you're that serious about investment-grade real estate, you know the first three rules are location, location, and location. Stuff this close to the law school is intensely valuable for that reason; there are always people needing rooms near the law school. Likewise, stuff a little further out is still pricey because it might make good housing for someone living at the business school, or the main campus.thepunisher24 wrote:Being dead serious here, but I hear your point that it might be hard to find one available. I'd love to own the condo I'm living in, for sure, but right now I'm content enough to rent it.

Arlington Court Condominiums, across the street from the Jefferson. Jeffersonian is an apartment complex, this is a unit of individually-owned condos.jawsthegreat wrote:Your living at Jeffersonian right?
