Re: UVA Class of 2013
Woohoo. Add me to the list too. In ED with a call from Mr. Dugas this morning. I used these boards a lot over the past year or so (super-splitter, re-applicant) and I'd like to give back, so PM me if you want specifics/advice.

Dammit I want to be in this thread, but I don't think I can bring myself to pull the ED trigger!!

Dooo it. I'm not sure how clear I am on my thinking on this because I haven't read much about it on these boards--but the public interest loan forgiveness programs seem huge at top schools like UVA. It's like backdoor financial aid. Either you shoot for big law and pay off loans, or get a nice job in PI or government (that you should be very competitive for with a T10 degree) and get assistance for 10 years. That's what really swayed me towards ED.

If your numbers give you a decent possibility of receiving merit aid, you should think carefully before doing ED. You may not have a decision until February (or even March, as in my case), but you shouldn't throw away a chance of getting aid just to guarantee admission and end the cycle, IMO.

Re: UVA Class of 2013
Well that is sort of my problem, assuming I scored what I think I scored on the LSAT last weekend I will have a shot at getting into some lower T14s but not for merit aid (I will be squeeking in). I will likely have a chance for merit aid at other lower ranked schools in the region I want to practice (20-40ish), but how much I don't know. I just cannot decide if $200,000 is worth it ITE with job prospects looking the way they have even in the T14.

That's a good point - if you are open to attending a lower ranked school with some money, ED may not be the best choice. Once you get your score, figure out what your chances are of getting aid at some of the lower ranked schools, and then determine if it's worth forgoing that chance for more likely admission to UVA.missvik218 wrote:Well that is sort of my problem, assuming I scored what I think I scored on the LSAT last weekend I will have a shot at getting into some lower T14s but not for merit aid (I will be squeeking in). Re: UVA Class of 2013
Yeah I should have prefaced my post. I had no chance at aid at a T14 and my reasons for ED were pretty much along the lines of what YC said. I also have an interest in public service/govt, so the VLFP seems like a good backstop for paying back loans.Cavalier wrote:If your numbers give you a decent possibility of receiving merit aid, you should think carefully before doing ED. With your numbers and being in-state, I wouldn't worry about it. I can't see you being waitlisted.wackjickham wrote:Not that anyone here would know, but I figure it was a good place to ask rather than put it in the middle of a thousand new threads created every day on here:
I'm about to submit my application to UVA and I'm wondering if being a double legacy will be enough to avoid the waitlist. I'm in-state with "Strong Consider" stats on LSP and I listed on my application that my father and mother both attended therefor a total of 3 degrees (along with a variety of aunts and uncles that I didn't list). Should I submit a "Why UVA" just to be safe since it is my #1 choice? I'm also interested in their family law alternative resolution clinic too. Figured you guys would know since whatever you did on your apps actually worked... Congratulations!

Re: UVA Class of 2013
Since you're in-state and have a strong family connection to UVA, I don't think they need any more convincing that you actually want to go there. A "why UVA" essay wouldn't hurt, but I can't imagine you being waitlisted without it.
