Re: UVA Class of 2013
From the email exchange I posted earlier, I think it's that the FinAid Office will get the money from the govt on August 16 and then after that they'll begin distributing it to the students. I'd figure 1week+ on the turnaround time for that, so maybe the 2nd week of classes we'll get some our $$$.Doritos wrote:Late Update: Expected disbursement date for loans is 8/16 confirmed with financial aid office. Re: UVA Class of 2013
Since we are on the topic of money, has anyone received the e-mail from the FinAid office with instructions for accepting and finalizing the federal loans?
EDIT: I called the office; the director plans on sending out the info within the next couple weeks.

On the subject of laptops, I'm looking at the Sony Vaio Z series. The newest models can get pretty pricey, but the specs + size are hard to beat. Any of the UVA tech-perts have an opinion? Is it way more than I need? How about the CW or E series? They're a little less portable though, which can be a literal pain when riding a bike.

I got the E series for just under $1,000. Pretty much went max specs on everything. The battery life is advertised as 3.5hrs and my experience has been about that. The guy is portable enough, very powerful, and the battery life is ok, if not great. I'm very happy with it after owning it for about two months.badwithpseudonyms wrote:On the subject of laptops, I'm looking at the Sony Vaio Z series. For a threat that was not a joke, it sure looked like one. I'm sure PETA will be happy to know he thought of his dog.berkeleykel06 wrote:Everyone heard about this? Virginia Law grad arrested for threatening to kill President Obama...

Thanks. I built an E series on Sony's website - pretty much maxed out the specs and right now they've got a deal where they'll throw in a blu-ray drive for free - for just under $1,000. But I read one review that clocked the battery life at a dismal 1.5 hrs! I might end up going with the spec'ed out E series and live with the extra few lbs.lilspainishflea wrote:I got the E series for just under $1,000. Pretty much went max specs on everything. Do you mean it's a gamble as in "you might not find a spot" or as in "you might get towed"? I'm just far enough from campus that I'll need to drive once in awhile (heavy rain, snow, running late, etc.) but I plan to ride my bike most of the time and drive when I have to do so. I don't know if it's worth buying a parking pass for the entire year...Kohinoor wrote:You should be able to park in the Blue Lot or not get a parking pass and do the Arlington/Harris Teeter lot GAMBLE.sccjnthn wrote:How difficult is it to find parking near the law school?
I noticed quite a few complexes listed a 10 minute drive but 40 minutes if you had to take public transportation.
On a related note, about when does the weather get bad in Charlottesville? Think I can make it most of the first semester on my bike?

Nice of that guy to let secret service know what he was doing. We need more people like him to blow the whistle on themselves before they actually commit crimes.

Yep. The battery performance is my only complaint about it but I can get by just fine for a few hours and find a plug if necessary. I'm not really the type to take my laptop to the park and attempt to do work.badwithpseudonyms wrote:Thanks. Arlington parking is so highly coveted that sometimes you don't have time to make the adjustments typical of more casual arrangements. When you see a spot, you take it and run to class before you're marked absent.badwithpseudonyms wrote:Do you mean it's a gamble as in "you might not find a spot" or as in "you might get towed"? I've not experienced a normal Charlottesville fall/winter.

If you want the Macbook Pro, I'd go for whichever version you want with the $100 student discount, and also get the Ipod Touch they give you for free (whether it's w/rebate or not, I'm not sure).dgouzoul wrote:hmmm shit. is the MBP bundle worth it? or should i get a MBP 13" myself? or just a regular macbook? I currently have a 3-year old Macbook, which works just fine and was really tempted to get the Pro but then went against it and got a Lenovo.

If you don't want to get AppleCare, then it seems like you should buy it on your own. I would like to have AppleCare, so I am just going to buy the bundle.dgouzoul wrote:hmmm shit. is the MBP bundle worth it? or should i get a MBP 13" myself? or just a regular macbook? It's: $1282.00 with the student discount on Apple's website for the computer + 3 year AppleCare + 200 rebate for iTouch.
It's: $1349.00 on UVA's website, but that includes the MBP, 3 year AppleCare, MS Office 08 (which doesn't come with in on Apple's website), the UVA software and such loaded onto it (which I guess you have to do when you get there?), as well as the 200 dollar rebate if you buy an iTouch. So it basically looks like about 68 more dollars on the UVA website, but that includes MS Office 08, UVA configured, and the ability to get a loaner laptop if something goes wrong. That seems more than worth it to me.
Again, though, you can get it for 1099 with the student discount on Apple's website if you don't buy AppleCare.

I think I am going with the bundle. The price is right and the whole loaner thing is really pushing me over the top.
Seriously? What are you waiting for?
Now there's a charge.
