WTF are you doing with the last few weeks before 1L.

I'm working all the way up to the start of school to get rid of lingering debt. I've got 54 days till orientation. What say you?

Kinda feel sorry for you, so I will help out. I am going to be working on my MW2 skillz, fapping continuously when I get bored, and refreshing TLS.

Working until 2 weeks before orientation. Then having fun/visiting family for a week and a half. Then moving across the country to a climate I've never lived in before and leaving all my friends, family, and bf behind.

Also spending my time checking my email/mail as obsessively as I did while waiting for acceptances/rejects because my school has yet to get me my F.A. info.

Playing assloads of Xbox, reading some books I've wanted to get read, and working until mid-July. Then I'll move, space out and do jack shit for about two weeks, and then orientation starts and the grind after that.

I worked until 5 days before orientation. It SUCKED. Getting paid all that time did NOT make up for it.
If you can, go on a vacation. Somewhere. Even for like 5 days. First semester 1L is a long and harrowing road.

I'll play. My dance card's pretty full:

Last day work is on Monday. Then 5 days visiting parents/family, followed by 4-day drive w/fiance across country.

Then ~2.5 weeks of apartment/house hunting, running, pool lounging and reading and moving into new apartment/house. Followed by 1 week backpacking in the Sierras, followed by hiking/buddy's wedding in the Rockies the weekend before class starts.

After 7 years of never being off work for more than 1 week at a time, I'm actually more excited about the next 1.5 months than I am about going to law school.

That sounds amazing but also very stressful

Working up until a couple weeks before day 1 (haven't decided exactly when yet).
Reading a lot (trying to improve my speed).
Learning to sail/windsurf.
Drinking.
Golfing/tennis a few times a week.
Relaxing every chance I get.
Edit to add spending record amounts of time on TLS and facebook while at work.

I think that about sums it up; looking forward to an awesome second half of summer.

I am now regretting my decision to work until 5 days prior to orientation.... sigh.

I picked up photography as a hobby...just ordered a camera about an hour ago. Will be working through august to pay of credit card(s) and save money for school. Playing PS3 (MW2), reading, and catching up on TV shows I never had time to watch during the school year.

I was reading this quickly, and for some reason I thought it said pornography.

I'll spend the next six weeks or so working as stage manager on a play that'll run through the end of July. I'll spend most of August relaxing and trying not to spend money before I move.

Is anyone reading GTM? I started it earlier this week and realized I may be able to better apply/understand the techniques it recommends once I start school, but I may be too busy to read this book once school starts. Maybe I should read it now and skim it later?

babysitting
cooking
running (worried that 1L will be a bit like freshman year for my waistline)
still apartment-hunting
east coast road trip
camping trip
stressing out that i'm going to be the stupidest person there

oh yeah and reading One L (probably a bad idea but my mom's attorney sent it home with her when she found out i was going to law school)
...wondering if i should know something about these "student guide books" the author mentions...

Given that Turow wrote OneL three decades ago, I'm not sure the "student guide books" he recommends would be (a) relevant or (b) in print. Further, other than its gripping exposition, there isn't much practical value in reading it; it doesn't prepare or inform today's 0Ls for 1L.

The consensus is that GtM is one of the worthwhile books to read before and during the first year. As many have noted, it becomes monotonous and redundant toward the middle, but that shouldn't stop you from picking it up.

Also, if you're interested, Turow has some pretty great legal fiction books out there. Limitations is a great, short read for the beach/couch.

Edit: Type-O

I'm finishing up OneL right now. It's interesting just to see the level of stress people have gone through. Plus, I love reading about the way things were decades ago, including things we won't have to worry about (like writing exams on a portable typewriter).

Turrow doesn't really mention the specific supplements. You should probably wait until classes start to find the right supplements for each class/professor. I read Law School Confidential and there are some suggestions in there as well.

I'll start on GTM next week and then will listen to the audio CD's for LEEWS. Both of these will have to be reviewed again after school starts.

wow...glad i actually mentioned something that i thought was just a useless bit of information about how i'm spending my days. as it was practically forced into my hands i just started into it without thinking about actual preparation for this year. most advice i've gotten has been "just don't think about law school until you get there" but now you guys have me re-thinking that position...

thanks for the suggestions : )
