Top Law Schools

I'm on the waiting list at the Aston so for now I need to start looking into other housing options. Anyone have any tips? I'd like to stay close to the gw campus for the first year and then move away later.

does anyone know anything (noise, pests, distance, rent, etc) about:
The President
Winston House
Jefferson House
The Atlas
any others?

have you tried craigslist? I've found a lot there, and sometimes you can get a nearly-year-long sublet for a reduced rate

I've been looking but it's hard to choose a place without any idea what the neighborhood, management, neighbors, pest problems (so scared of this) etc are

well if your goal is to be close to school that's pretty easy to pick without knowing the neighborhood. pests... if you're clean they'll probably stay out. management... idk, but whats the worst they could do? not fix your flooded bathroom? refuse to pay rent until they do, or have it written into your contract.

I am actually looking for the same thing and happened to stumble across a place called Columbia Plaza. You should check it out, fairly decent price (for the area) and it is only 2 blocks from the law school building.

Hey guys, I just finished my 1L year at GW last Wednesday, and I've been happy w/where I'm living. I have a studio at Columbia Plaza on the corner of 23rd and Virginia. It takes 5-7 minutes to walk to school, and other than my annoying cop neighbor, everything is great. I moved from the midwest so rent was a shocker, but I think I pay a little less than my friends in comparable places around, even in the Aston. Definitely cheaper than Winston House

I'm a litte behind in the game because I just got accepted off the wait list this week. How is the housing search going so far? Does anyone know how difficult/easy it is to get into Columbia Plaza (through the school or directly)?

I'll be moving from California so I won't be able to see anything before moving in. Ideally I'm trying to find a 2BR place close to campus. Also looking for ways to find a roommate if anyone has suggestions.

Went to GW undergrad...I'll do my best to answer...

The President- Never been inside, but I'd imagine it's really overpriced because it's right by the metro and directly on GW's campus. Also, it's across from a bunch of undergrad dorms, so I'd imagine that wouldn't be particularly pleasant.

Winston House- It's really, really nice inside. Spacious apts. A bit of a walk from the law school - maybe like 8 blocks? But it's also much closer to DuPont circle, which is a much better neighborhood for going out than Foggy Bottom. However, from what I hear it's really really expensive.

Jefferson House- Had a lot of friends who lived here. The apts are on the small side, but I'm pretty sure it's considerably cheaper than the other options listed here. It's about 5 blocks from the law school. Also, it's right behind the metro, so that's convenient.

The Atlas- Don't know about this one.

I'd also add:
The Savoy- Right across from Winston House. Nice, relatively spacious apts. When I was at GW the apts on the lower floors were cheaper than the ones up higher, so it might be affordable if you're living on like the 2nd floor

The York- Only 2 blocks from the law school. Rooms are on the small side, but I think the rent is fairly reasonable for the area.

Circle Arms- I don't know too much about this one, but it's near Jefferson House and a friend of mine got a great deal there.

Colombia Plaza- I think the posted rent is on the expensive side, but I've heard of a LOT of people having success negotiating. Some of the apts are absolutely gorgeous- a lot of them have views of the Kennedy Center. Also, if you have a roommate, the 2-bedrooms have HUGE living rooms.

For what it's worth, per Craigslist the President and Jefferson House are about the same cost for a studio. (500sq at President, "large" at Jefferson)

Hey, I just finished 1L @ GW. I live in the Jefferson House. My bf just measured our studio today and it's 425 sq ft. We pay 1325. The building is actually a condo so you deal with the owner of the condo directly. I imagine this could be good or bad, but it's been great for us as our ll is super chill. I've seen ads for other units that go up to 1500. I can't imagine paying that much to stay here. That said, it's clean, there's a pool, there's a front desk staff, and it's very close to the ls and metro. Also, two people in a studio? Don't try it! Is anyone bringing their dog? I have an 8 year old lab I'd like to bring with me and am wondering how it'd work out.
edit: decided it's impossible on a $1300 rental budget. =( she'll have to stay with my mom.

Does anyone here know what nice areas outside of D.C. would be a decent choice for someone that has to commute to D.C. for work? Traffic is a big concern for me.

I have lived in DC my whole life and to go to GW I would recommend the Arlington/Clarendon/Rosslyn area. Crystal City is also manageable. Traffic everywhere is bad but take the Metro.
