I didn't see one of these threads for everyone who has decided to attend SMU, probably because the majority of us still post in the SMU 2010 thread. Feel free to check in here, and sign up for the facebook group: http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=1 ... 626&ref=ts

Evening program here... so technically class of 2014 but I'm gonna claim you guys anyway since we're starting together :)

I nominate myself for the "Official Old Guy" position in the class. Unless your age starts with a 4, you're a young whippersnapper!

I'll be your wing man. In the all-important 35-44 demo w/kids, career, a few grays and a house to sell before the fall. You can anchor the night court; I'll back you up, old man.

For the other evening division folks, if we're in the class of 2014 are we automatically at the top of it before all the kiddos start their full-time program in the fall of 2011? Not like it matters - what BigLaw firm wants a 40-year old bill monkey anyway? I was just practicing my arrogant lawyer schtick and was looking for something pointless and inane to brag about (hey, check me out - full-time job and still top of my class at Dedman!).

I know you're kidding about it... but I think it's an interesting point about how we get combined with the full time class so I'll explain it for anyone who might be wondering.

At the admitted students dinner the dean of student services explained how the evening program folks get integrated with the full timers for class rank, OCI, etc...

Basically, at the end of our second year we will have completed all of the full time 1L courses. We will also have an additional 10-12 hours of electives completed that the full time students who are just completing their first year do not have.

At this point, we are integrated with the full time class of 2014 and ranked all together as the class of 2014. Our elective courses are not considered in this ranking - so we're all being compared on the basis of the same classes (Contracts I and II, Torts I and II, Civ Pro I and II, LRWA I and II, Property I and II, Con Law I, and Criminal Law).

I think it's a pretty fair system. And the closest you can get to an apples to apples comparison when one group of apples is actually oranges :)

Thank you for a thoughtful, sincere and well-informed answer to my admittedly facetious question. That's actually really good to know. Based upon this system, it appears that sometime around the 2012 primary I can start stressing about whether I'll get to pledge Baker Botts.

In the meantime I'll be practicing my "networking" (e.g., "Would you like a scone with your espresso, sir?").

Is anyone looking for a roommate? I'm going to the ASD on Friday, and I plan to head to Dallas a day early to meet with an apartment locator and look at a few places. I want to live within a few miles of campus, but the one bedrooms are pretty expensive. If anyone is interested, send a PM (I'm a guy, btw).

I don't think I'll make it up until second week of August.

Less than four months.

I was going to... but when I asked about it I was told it was only for full time students. Kind of a bummer, since the evening program dinner didn't include stuff like a sample lecture. I guess I'll survive, but it would have been cool to meet some of you.

I'm a gal and planning on living in Uptown but I think I'm going to live alone. I just can't risk a bad roommate 1L. I've been working with an apartment locator on finding some good apts in Uptown if anyone wants some recommendations. I'm going to Dalls 1st weekend of July to sign the paperowork and then moving in beginning of August.

What kind of deals are you finding? How far is Uptown from campus?

2 freeway exits (on State highway 75 -central expressway) or about 1-2 miles depending on how far south in Uptown you are. "Uptown" is not very well defined, geographically. The North end of Uptown is at the Blackburn/Haskell/Lemmon exit and the University Campus starts just North of Mockingbird Lane. Knox/Henderson/Fitzhugh is the only exit between Mockingbird and Blackburn/Haskell/Lemmon on Central Expwy. You could actually ride a bicycle from Uptown almost all the way to the campus on the Katy Trail. The Law School is on the North end of the campus.

*Katy Trail is a paved walking/running/bike trail that runs from The American Airlines Center (arena where the Mavs and Stars play) almost all the way to Mockingbird Lane.

I am interested in hearing recommendations. :) What apartment complexes would you recommend and what is the price range in Uptown?

The locator I contacted came up with 54 apts in the Uptown area based on my price range (no more than $1050/mo for a 1 bed/bath). I've narrowed it down to 15 or so but it's hard to tell from looking online, esp since I'm not too familiar w/ Dallas. I'd assume they're in a nice/safe area since they're all in Uptwon but I'm not positive. I've reviewed apartments that range from $1250 to $800/mo for a 1 b/b. Obviously the higher priced ones are in newer bldgs with more amenities. I think if you do plan on having a roommate then an apt in Uptown could easily be done for around $600/mo. (not including utilities) from what I have seen.

Some names of aprtments I am into so far include:

1. Cityville Oak Park
2. The Belmont
3. AMLI Quadrangle
4. IMT Seville Uptwon
5. Marquis State Thomas
6. Gables Villa Rosa
7. State Thomas Ravello
8. Easton
9. Thirty 377
10. Gables 3636 McKinney
11. Gables W. Village

If you are from Dallas and/or are familiar w/ any of the abovementioned properties please give me your two cents. Like I said, it's hard to judge based on online pics. I' plan on getting a better idea when I visit Dallas in July. I also know that there is the list of apts that came with the admit materials.

If you want to use an apartment locator (it's a free service) I have been really happy with Promove so far. I know that as it gets closer to when I want to move in (beginning of August) they are going to call and find out all the pricing/deals for the complexes I am interested in. The locator has contacted a few already and I've gotten around $950/mo from a few (again 1b/b). One also waived all fees (app, admin and security deposit) b/c I was a student. They are also going to schedule tours of the complexes for me for my July visit.

PM me if you have any more questions.

Also, if you want to live alone and think a 1 b/b might be out of the question, almost all of these places offer studio apartments for a cheaper rent.
