I've been paying car insurance for 2 years and I haven't needed to use the insurance. Likewise, I would like a new car... Do you think it would be unethical to purposefully roll my car off a cliff and commit insurance fraud?

I have been hoping that my company will lay me off before I have to quit. If your boss is offering it to you, I would take the income. In most states though, you have to be "readily available and willing" to accept full-time employment in order to continue receiving unemployment benefits.

It definitely sounds sketchy, but maybe he was planning on terminating your employment and you beat him to it.
As for the income part, my understanding is: (1) if you collect unemployment, you only collect a portion of what you were earning when you were employed, and (2) becoming a student makes you ineligible to collect unemployment.

I don't know about CA, but in PA, you have to "be willing and able to work" in order to collect unemployment. I believe the ABA has tight restrictions on full time law students working. Therefore, one could not be "able to work" while in law school.
I knew someone who was able to collect after being laid off while a full time student in UG. But I don't think it's possible in law school.

Once you begin school you are no longer eligible for unemployment in California. You could try to get around that but it would not only fall under the unethical category, but the fraud category as well.

Another thought:
1. Have you boss lay you off
2. Collect unemployment for the next 3 months
3. Get l33t MW2 skillz
4. Stop drawing benefits when you start school
5. Profit??
