Are we supposed to be doing anything now?
I haven't heard anything since I got my deposit received email.

I don't think so, I haven't heard anything either. I saw the finaid department did set up loans for me, though, which is kinda strange but whatever.PhantaManta wrote:Are we supposed to be doing anything now?

AsexualChocolate: I didn't attend. I wasn't going to make a whole post for that, but I did see your question

Ah. They didn't process my financial info for loans yet, which I emailed them about (only because Tulane sent me that a while ago and I am known to worry), and Nathan Neely said that they are still processing people who sent in their information after the priority deadline (:().
So if anyone was wondering about that specifically, there you go .
Guess I will just focus on these last five classes for now. I think next major thing I'll be doing is coming in June-ish to check out / try and get an apartment. I think.
AsexualCohoclate: I didn't go either but would be interested to hear from anyone that did!!!

I'm coming Put my deposit in and kissed Hastings goodbye because they were stingy on the aid. Besides, Nevada is an awesome state. Although, I have lived here most of my life, so I might be slightly biased. I hit the join button for the Facebook group a couple days ago, but have not been accepted yet.

Phanta: I went to undergrad in southern califronia, but I live in reno. Nevadan for life. Although, Vegas is so far away from us here in the north, almost feels out of state.

Lifelong Renoite myself and I agree. I'm expecting quite a change from up here.historyholly wrote:Phanta: I went to undergrad in southern califronia, but I live in reno. Nevadan for life. Although, Vegas is so far away from us here in the north, almost feels out of state.

Re: UNLV/Boyd c/o 2013
My best friend spent half his undergrad in Reno, and half at UNLV. From the conversations I've had with him, that's a reasonable expectation. He seems to think the change is for the better, but 'better' largely depends on what you're used to.Haskell83 wrote:Lifelong Renoite myself and I agree. I got a letter with my scholarship info, but no other financial aid information. Is anyone else in the same boat?

Scholarships are (almost?) always processed seperately from general financial aid stuff. I have not received financial aid information from UNLV regardling loans as of yet. I spoke to Mr. Neeley via email about this about a month-ish ago and he told me they were still processing FASFA from many students.

I assume then that grants would be separate as well and come with the loan information. I just want to be able to plan out my finances.

Speaking of which... wtf is UNLV doing? I see other threads from other schools popping up about deadlines for requesting loans, and I need loans. Tulane sent me loan information like 2 months ago... I can't really sign a lease on an apartment unless I have loans... sigh...

Re: UNLV/Boyd c/o 2013
In my experience, once they get around to dealing with loans they're pretty quick about it. I'm a little surprised that they haven't put out more information, but it really should be coming soon.PhantaManta wrote:Speaking of which... wtf is UNLV doing? Ok, so I called the Fin Aid office and they said I have had an award for a while -_-. Good to know. Apparently there is a way to get to the info online, but I didn't see anything via status checker. So, I recommend calling if you haven't gotten anything yet.

Yep, sub, unsub and grad plus. wont need the grad plus, thank god. Did you get a scholly? I called again after I posted and Chris from the fin aid office said that the law school is going to send us our logins for the fin aid website some time next week. We won't get them via snail mail.

Well the most you can get in loans / year is 17,850... They only calculate for 9 months, though. So you either need to not spend a lot or have some other money somewhere. In my opinion, I think 17,850 should be enough if you live cheaply and don't experience a lot of unexpected costs... but it would be cutting it close for a full year...... perhaps. Maybe I should let someone who has actually lived in Vegas answer this ;P

Re: UNLV/Boyd c/o 2013
Heh, I was actually thinking 17000 is too generous. The amount they gave me in loans would allow me a $2000 monthly budget for 9 months. I don't even live off that now. I was thinking between 10,000 and 12,000 for nine months would be enough. I think I managed to live off 9000 one year when I was in undergrad, so I can be frugal when need be. I didn't think about using loans for the entire year, since I will definitely be working during the summer.

I'm pretty sure COL is closer to 20k.PhantaManta wrote:Well the most you can get in loans / year is 17,850... They only calculate for 9 months, though. $17,850 is almost $1,500 a month (over 12 months), all other bills aside. That's livable, even taking into account car insurance, gas, and the outrageous registration fees if you have anything approaching a new car and are a resident. Figure $600-900 in rent, plus whatever you eat for food and another $200-300 in utilities (maybe less, cause (as I understand it) who has time for cable during 1L?) Also keep in mind that 'COL' = anything besides tuition, which means books (and everything else we'll panic and buy) come out of that too.
Budgeting for 9 months makes ~$18k pretty comfortable, but keep in mind that ITE paid 1L summer jobs are potentially scarce, and unless you have everything set up my understanding is that unpaid but legal related >>> paid non-legal for 2L internships. Given that, I think one has to budget for 12 months and be pleasantly surprised if it turns out they get paid during the summer.
I'm banking on getting ~$20k, and won't be living like a king (though it won't exactly be Ramen every night). Course, I have a ginormous car payment, so anyone without that would be much more comfortable than I am.

I thought that the COA amount you can borrow is capped at 17,850 by the school.Vegas_Rebel wrote:I'm pretty sure COL is closer to 20k.PhantaManta wrote:Well the most you can get in loans / year is 17,850... "The estimated cost of attendance (COA) for the academic year (fall and spring semesters) will vary according to a student’s enrollment status. The estimated COA (excluding tuition and fees) is as follows:
* Full Time: $17,875
* Part Time: $17,025"
Later it says:
"Students may receive scholarship and loans up to their estimated Cost of Attendance (COA). The total financial aid awards, in any combination, cannot exceed the estimated COA. Students whose basic expenses exceed this amount may contact the Student Financial Services Office to request an individual COA review after the semester begins."
But I don't know how easy that is to do.
Seriously? What are you waiting for?
