Do you have to be American citizen to become a prosecutor?

Post by BrianGriffintheDog » Wed Nov 25, 2009 11:04 pm

Hello,

I was just wondering do you have to be American citizen to become a prosecutor?

What if you're a Canadian? Is it possible to get a dual citizenship and become a prosecutor? Or permanent resident?

Thanks in advance!

This is not a definitive answer, but my guess is that if you pass the bar in the US, you should be able to be a prosecutor in that state. A quick call to the DA of your choice should be able to satisfy your queries.

Don't call tomorrow, though, as we Americans have some national holiday about turkeys and parades, or some nonsense like that.

General answer: Yes.

I'm sure some departments vary but for the most part, you have to be a US citizen to generally have any State or Federal job.
