Lateral movement in firms?

For firms with multiple locations, possibly even in multiple countries, is there any opportunity for lateral transfer (ie. same position in a different location)?

A move, or even two is common (e.g. an M&A att'y in NYC gets sent to London office to do M&A), but don't expect to tour the country moving between offices every 18 months.

If you can pull off a transfer in a firm, how does it impact your career? Does it tend slow you down if you are trying for partner?
Also, what is the ease of transfering like this? I have heard that it isn't that easy to do, and depends on demand in the firm's respective offices...is this true?
