URM OCI callbacks????

Post by Anonymous User » Mon Nov 09, 2009 12:32 am

Piggybacking another related thread........

School (or at least give a range, like "CCN" or "T20-30" if you don't want to be specific)
GPA, Journals
# of interviews
# of callbacks

Howard Univ. grads especially welcome.

Good luck with this. But I'm going to go out on a limb and say that there aren't enough URM posters (Black, Native American, Mexican) on here who are already in law school to make this even reach 1 page.

I'm not in law school yet but my older brother and two of his closest friends are URM's at HYSCCN. I'll give info for all three but wont say which is which. Hispanic and Black URM's, males and females:

LR
around 22 interviews v50

callbacks at 17 including two V5's (declined 3). s/he has also received offers at 11, and is trying to decide between super prestige WLKR, or Cleary who have been very upfront about their inclusive and diverse atmosphere.

Around median

23 interviews v100
callbacks at 9 including one v10. 3 offers.

Lower half of the class near bottom
21 interviews v100 and non vault
11 callbacks including 3 v50. 2 offers.

Hope this helps.

"Well-below" median AAs at Chicago can comfortably get V100 gigs I have been told.

So is this just because of exogenous pressures (when I say "exogenous" I mean forces outside the legal profession or tangentially associated with it, media, politicians, etc.) or is this all because the Bar association basically compels firms to hire more diverse applicants?

I would hate to be AA (I look AA but I am really Mexican) and enter one of the most prestigious firms in the country. Seems like you'd have to try awfully hard to gain your crotchety old white cohorts respect, or else you run the risk of being Eddie Murphy's character in Trading Places reincarnate.

One thing to caution, is that the person near the bottom of the class felt that a lot of the callbacks s/he received had very little substance and felt almost like they were simply for show. So take what you will from that.

Whoa I'm glad I was wrong with that first post. Was the bolded the black female candidate? I'm guessing HYS if she got the Wachtell offer. It sounds like going to a top law school---even in this recession---is a very very good idea for a URM.

It's cool---we need reality around here. Since you are anonymous can you tell us which of CCN (I'm guessing NYU)?

The consensus at my MVPB was that offers had NOT been extended to quite a few minority students as of a week or two ago. Several have been extended offers in the intervening two weeks. Those with high (top 1/3 to top 1/4) grades and solid resumes appear to have had comfortable cycles and were courted by many firms.

So a URM in the top 20 percent (or better) of MVPB shouldn't have any trouble then? Is order of coif at these schools pretty much a golden ticket for URMs?

No, because you get order of the coif two years after you get a job.

I asked this exact question. Top 20% going as low as perhaps top third would = no trouble.

very true. bottom half at mvp with several callbacks and no offers. life sucks.

btw, as a research guide, http://www.betterlegalprofession.org/ is fantastic especially for URMs because it lays out diversity numbers for each firm in each office: ie., Skadden may seem to have a lot of latino representation, but if you dig deep they're all in the Miami office (surprise surprise)

and Boston offices seem to be allergic to diversity

simple math.

In the past class sizes were large enough where all URM students could get a job at a V100 firm(and firms would still be undersubscribed)

With class sizes shrinking, V100 firms can get a similar/higher percentage of URM students without having to hire each and every one.

I posted this in another thread but it seems to particularly relevant here:

Final Results:

MVPB
- above median
- secondary journal
- banking background
- URM

20 screening interviews
12 callbacks; canceled 2
6 offers (1 V5 NYC, 1 V10 NYC, 2 V20 NYC, 1 Magic Circle, 1 V 100)
Accepted V5 (non-sweatshop) and withdrew from the rest!

By way of background, I had my own reasons for singling out one V5 firm (didn't OCI or resume drop with others because I was really turned off by the rest) and then they offered me, so everything went very well.

Boston is allergic to diversity period. It's funny how much people bash the south for being "conservative" etc. but I will tell you right now that a black person is far far better off in Atlanta than in Boston.

Seriously? What are you waiting for?
