Found this and thought the few of you TLS posters that are interested in PD work would be interested in this. FYI it was published in 2007.

I spoke with someone in the
San Francisco City Attorney's Office recently, who told me that to the best of her knowledge the San Francisco Public Defender hadn't had an opening for a full-time attorney for eight years.

I don't know for sure, but that seems hard to believe based on what I've seen at other CA counties. Eight years is a long time to go without hiring anyone for that position. You've got to figure that the PD's that start at the bottom may feel inclined to leave if they are still dealing with DUIs and other minor crimes after 8 yrs and not moving up on the scale to attorney II, III, etc. If they haven't hired anyone in that long, who's handling those low level cases, pd's with 8+yrs of experience? Just seems unlikely, but what the hell do I know.
Many counties are hiring entry level pd/das on a continuous basis. Usually you just have to google a county's employment prospects and you can find out if they're hiring and what the status is.

FYI, you can look up any pd/da salary scale, it's public record. In CA, da/pd scale is identical, based on the dozen or so counties I've looked up. Generally, starting at mid 50s to mid/high 60s for both based on the various counties I've looked up in CA. Not just SF, SD, LA, etc locations btw.
