Does ranking (stability?) matter that much? Liked people at both firms. Both have practice groups I'm interested in; nice people, etc. Big hesitation is commuting and lifestyle of SV v. SF. Already pretty set on living in SF.
Don't want to give up any tangible career diffs only b/c of the above though. help. tyia.

SV = silicon valley. SF = san fran, but preferring answers from people who know this area.

V10 vs V20 doesn't say much about stability (Williams & Connolly. Debevoise, Gibson Dunn, Paul Weiss and WilmerHale are as stable as any V10 besides Wachtell), and it doesn't say much about prestige outside of New York either. You really have to look at the specifics of the firm.

i interviewed at 2 V10s in SV (i bet the same ones you did) as well as V20s and V30s in SF. alas, i did not get offers from the V10s so i didn't have to make this choice. if given the option though, i would have chosen the SV firms unless your V20 is gibson dunn. the commute will suck but job security is #1 to me. at all other SF shops except gibson, i would have had concern over firm stability.

I chose a SFV10 over SVV10 for a number of reasons, but a big one was the commute. During callbacks I talked to a bunch of people who had moved homes or firms specifically because the SF --> SV commute sucks so much. Seriously something to think about ...

As someone who lives in the area, I can promise you'll get sick of the SF to SV commute, and fast. I would pick the SF firm without hesitation.
