How much do they care about law school GPA (assuming bottom-of-the-class law school grades from one of Harvard/Stanford/Columbia, but with good undergrad grades also from one of the 3 schools)?

and do they need relevant experience in business/accounting?

i can definitely appreciate what your post stands for-->uses of a JD outside of the typical law firm job, but...big four accounting may be the one of the few jobs that that rivals the legal industry in terms of crappy hours...that bad thing with accounting, is you dont get paid well until you make partner...and even then, you $900k is vastly inflated (any partner making this covers the elite client base in the firm's top office, and is most likely cream of the crop)

It doesn't really matter to be honest with you, its all over the board. If you can sell yourself, its a possibility. Their biggest thing is accounting experience, but I know 3-4 JDs with poly sci ugrads and are doing fine, it just required a steeper learning curve.

We don't discriminate as much as law firms do in terms of schools and class rank. If you went to a tier 1 school and are above the median, you get consideration (i have personally talked to a recruiter, and our cut off is top 66%...so even below median is possible). If you go to a t-14 school, specialty groups give you consideration (ie, national groups)...(my GULC friend was below median) Since we only pay like 70k we don't care as much as law firms. They are just looking for someone to do work.

If you go to a school below tier 1, you generally need to have accounting experience to be considered and be above the median. We even have TTT grads, but they generally have accounting ugrads and work just in the general departments.

Yeah, the national partners are very good at what they do, but it is a possibility. The hours aren't terrible, we work avg of 50 hours / week. Nothing compared to big law (i worked at a v100 firm as a ugrad assitant, they avged ~ 60-65 ish +)

I also agree though too, the pay sucks until you make partner, people generally get stuck around 120-130k unless they make partner, and sr. manager to partner ratio is about 1 to 10...so its almost like you are an associate at a big law firm at that point, and that is about after 8-10 years to make sr. manager.

Even if you are the bottom of your class from these schools, i would def try and contact them, they would love people from a school like this if you have a solid work ethic and can sell yourself.

What is with people thinking this is an easy backup? These jobs are not easy to get right now - the Big 4 are freezing and laying off just like big law.

No. Not ITE. Just check here: http://www.taxtalent.com/forum/index.cf ... AT=general and here: --LinkRemoved--. Word is that if you don't have an accounting background at least or even are not eligible to sit for the CPA, some offices aren't interested.

I agree with that to some extent, we had layoffs, but we also have reduced our new hire headcount by only 5%. The recession more-or-less gave us an excuse to trim the fat (most done at the senior and manager level). I know for a fact 2 out of the 4 big 4 firm's midwest tax practice grew by 1-2% this past year.

Our national tax office in DC is comprised almost entirely of JDs.
