Deferred entering 1st year associate, look for work?

I'm curious what other deferred associates are doing in the mean time to kill 4-5 months. This past year they gave stipends for the most part, but this coming year they may not be as generous. Any suggestions/insight in what to do if you're deferred for at least a few months, possibly a year? I realize there's a huge difference but I do not know yet and am unsure what to do. I realize this is small beans compared to what others are going through right now, so I don't mean to complain in the least.

Haven't firms been encouraging pro-bono work? Volunteer? This is a lot easier to do with a stipend, I guess.

do you have to be doing something in the legal field, why not travel a bit?

If there's a stipend I'm open to this, but if not, I can't afford this. I have debt and other obligations.

Same goes for traveling. If there's a stipend, I'm all for it, but I'm assuming the worst until I hear otherwise.

I'm a deferred incoming associate. Rather than wait for January, I took the one year public interest deferral that my firm offered. I got lucky and found a position in Hawai'i, so now I get to do public interest work in paradise! :D

In conclusion, I guess one possibility is to combine work and travel.

The point would be to produce a paper or series of papers for publication in law journals. I imagine this would give you a purpose, so to speak, during the otherwise pretty slow 4-5 months, and it might help you land a clerkship, teaching position, or gov/PI job later on, too. This wouldn't be for everyone, but it is worth considering.
Good suggestion. Not sure I have the discipline for it and doesn't help pay the bills, but not a bad fall-back.
