Callbacks in markets you're not interested in

Post by IStillPlayVideoGames » Thu Aug 20, 2009 12:51 pm

Hey guys,

During OCI I bid on a lot of firms in secondary markets I wasn't particularly interested in just for the interview experience. Now I'm getting callbacks from some of them and I was wondering how everyone here has been handling similar situations? Should you go on a callback even if you don't think you would accept a summer offer?

Is everyone just generally accepting every callback they get?

Dude, that is pretty selfish of you. Not only did you reduce the number of people from your school that the firm interviewed, but you are wasting people's time. If you know for sure you would not accept or even really consider accepting an offer, kindly tell them that you are not interested. That way, they can call the next person they were interested in and who ACTUALLY wants to work there. Best of luck with the rest of OCI

I have to agree that it was a pretty selfish choice... hopefully you didn't take the place of someone who really wants to go back to their hometown and would have jumped at the offer from that firm. If you are not interested in the firm, decline the callback, it would be a waste of your time as well as the time of the people who will take time out of their day to meet with you.

Fly first class out there, get a baller ass room, grab a limo, order a shitton of room service, and then get shitfaced at lunch on the callback and just remember to charge it all to the law firm.

Yeah, I definitely feel guilty about it. But how do you balance no-offer anxiety while altruistically turning down callbacks. That just seems ridiculous.

even if ur not interested go on the callbacks and use it for practice/free food.

if ur taking someone else's spot who actually wants to work there then it is their fault for not working harder.

I forgot to mention this on my last post- be sure to charge blow and hookers to the firm as well on your callback.

Take the interview. Working at a firm/office you don't really like >>> unemployed or unpaid. I don't think it's selfish, I think it's playing it safe.

If you could see yourself starting your career in that market even though it's not your first (second/third) choice, ITE, take what you can get -- especially if the firm has offices in markets that you'd prefer more (maybe you could transfer in a few years, though I'm not sure how that works).

If not, it's a waste of everybody's time. Basic rule is that you only interview for the markets you're interested in.

if you have no other callbacks yet, definitely jump on it

you might not be interested in it if you had several other callbacks, but if you don't yet, then take it. you don't want to be a dick but you have to look out for yourself too. sometimes people get too dickish in calling other people selfish
