It's precisely because people lack enough social awareness to tell what "within reason" means that TLS exists.

Pretty sure I can land W&C with that line. Hah! W&C is Williams & Connolly to me. Maybe that's a D.C. bias.

Any tips on where to buy a suit in Chicago. Not looking to go overboard, but I need something decent.
Also, for a second suit, is Gray, or Charcoal the way to go for interviews? I already have a navy.

Go to Bloomies, they always have sales in men's suits, and treat your self to a nice Hugo Boss or Hugo by Hugo Boss suit. You can also go with Theory or Zegna. But something like that is nice/stylish enough to wear to a wedding, not a typical frump business suit.

Brooks Brothers is having their semi-annual sale right now which is a pretty good deal on some normally pricey suits if you want to go that route.Desert Fox wrote:Any tips on where to buy a suit in Chicago. Not looking to go overboard, but I need something decent.

Charcoal. Dark navy and charcoal are the two staple fabrics BB carries. Maybe take full advantage of the sale and pick up a charcoal pinstripe to add to your rotation for the SA your well-dressed self will land.Desert Fox wrote:How long does it last? Also, I can't say this emphatically enough to everyone whining about shoes: just get a goddamn pair of black cap toes.
They don’t have to be Aldens, though I believe they are the best quality American shoe, but you should spend some money on them – AE is great, and JM has some high quality models. They are investments that will outlast random cheap shoes you buy for OCI, and people notice them. You can tailor a cheap suit to look great, but cheap shoes will always look like cheap shoes.
Just make sure that:
1) The laces are closed, like in the picture.
2) The soles are leather.
3) The shoes have just a simple cap toe, though a perforated cap is fine.
4) The toes are round, not square.
5) They’re black.
Black cap toes are the most basic shoe a man should have. I don’t care if whiskey brown matches your navy suit better, or if you think cap toes are boring and would rather get wing tips. You can buy those shoes and wear them when you actually have a job. First, just follow the most basic rule of men’s business wear and interviewing.

Brooks Brothers, d00d. While you're looking for suits, take advantage of the buy 4/get 40% off sale on dress shirts.Desert Fox wrote:2 days / weekend / 4 days / weekend/ 1 dayGeePee wrote:How many days long is your OCI and how willing are you to wash shirts in between?Desert Fox wrote:How many shirts am I going to need for OCI? 2 or more like 4?

Also, Charles Tyrwhitt has been having some pretty great sales. Very good quality dress shirts for $50.beachbum wrote:Brooks Brothers, d00d. I have a charcoal Madison suit from Brooks Brothers, and it's great quality for the price.. Plus, you get in-house tailoring along with the suit, which is usually pretty good (or, at least, it is at the one near me). Will definitely buy again in the future, although I'm not sure if I can afford to dole out for a new navy suit this summer.Desert Fox wrote:Yea it looks like I'm spending well over a grand tomorrow at Brooks Brothers, but it seems like a great deal.

Try Macy's for shirts. You can get nice shirts from Macy's for equal to or cheaper than BB prices.

macys sucks for work shirts. their shirts are more for evening wear - you can tell because the vast majority of them are very dark shades, unless you want to shell out 70 bucks a shirt for the RL collection.
for shirts go to charles tyrwhitt - can buy online. can usually get them for 40 bucks each and the quality and patterns are excellent.

It's a great feeling to get some substance to your wardrobe though. Well worth it.Desert Fox wrote:Yea it looks like I'm spending well over a grand tomorrow at Brooks Brothers, but it seems like a great deal.
Since you are already splurging on the suits, make sure your tie game is in order too. Good ties are crucial.

Re: Lets talk OCI suits (particularly shirts)
What's good with ties is hard to describe in words. I'd recommend buying in person, atl east for your first few, and holding them up next to shirts and jackets.
Bright red can be aggressive (good? bad? who knows) but otherwise the tie is the one area where you can get away with a lot color / pattern wise, even for interviewing. The kinds of ties you see on presidential candidates are probably the most conservative, straight dark red and blue numbers, but I don't think you need to be quite that reserved to get a job.
