Does anyone have any insight/advice on which to choose for 2L summer? I'm interested in trial work and leaning towards Boies, but wondering if the better strategy might be to start at Davis Polk and lateral to a boutique later on?

Both great options. DPW is your more traditional massive white shoe firm that’ll be a great name on the resume, but it’s also more of a corporate powerhouse than lit. You almost assuredly would not see a courtroom there for several years.
BSF lost some of its prestige after the fallout 5 years ago, but they do seem to have had a very impressive last 2 years and are likely on a positive upward trend. Not sure how much longer David Boies has though and that could always change things once he’s gone. They are a trial firm through and through, so you will get courtroom experience within your first couple years and have a lot more ownership over your work. They also pay above market.
if you’re sure you want to do trial work / litigation generally, I’d go BSF. If you’re unsure and just want the stability of a big name NY firm and potentially lateral after, can’t go wrong with DPW.

summer at BSF. would highly recommend. very autonomous internship with adequate support but no one breathing down your neck. also there is no in-person requirement for associates/partners (at least in the non-nyc office I am in but i'm pretty sure its firm-wide). summers are in 3x a week. good work.
