I am a new partner in a BigLaw firm. I have plenty of work to do but mostly its servicing other partners. I am eager to develop my own stand alone practice. I had an initial consultation with a Biglaw business development coach. He claims to have had a lot of success with other Biglaw partners. But his fee is about $7,000. Anyone have any experience with this? Is this worth it?

I have some friends that received this service for free from their firm. Does your firm not offer any coaching on Bizdev for new partners?
Otherwise, I think they can occasionally be helpful but I wouldn't expect miracles.

As someone that owns his own business, this is a question that marks a mindset shift. Are you a business or a worker? Do you have any sales experience? Do you want to be a rainmaker?
7k is a drop in the bucket. I personally spend like 60-100k a year in marketing, coaching, and self development.
There are an also a ton of great books that people in Biglaw don’t read. If you do, you will put yourself ahead of most.

What are 3 books you'd recommend to the audience?

Never split the difference (negotiation focused but applies to sales), traction (just good to have some business sense on how it operates), and how to win friends and influence people (classic, everyone should read).
I’d start there. Honorable mention is unreasonable hospitality which I haven’t read but heard it’s great for biglaw lawyers.
