3L Recruiting for DC Tax

I’ll be a SA at a NY V20 this summer. I want to rerecruit into a DC tax practice. Lower T14, slightly above median GPA. My firm doesn’t have a tax practice in DC. Is this realistic? Or should I start in my firm and lateral later?

You can give it a shot, but I wouldn't get my hopes up too much. 3L recruiting is tough no matter what, and D.C. is an extremely tough market. You'd have a much easier time lateraling to D.C. as an experienced tax practitioner than getting in through 3L recruiting. For tax, NYC will see more big M&A deals while D.C. is better for controversy.
