Do law firms that practice up or out ever recruit attorneys as associates with 12 (10+) years of experience?

I know several and have had colleagues make such moves, both as senior associates and counsel where there’s a need.

Maybe to the extent they are recruiting former AUSAs that don't come back as partners immediately? I have to imagine though if you are being brought back as a 12th year associate the firm either (1) very seriously going to consider you as partner or (2) has some agreement with you for you to be perma counsel (although if it was option two I don't understand why they wouldn't just bring you in as counsel.

I think 12th year is still in the realm of possibility. You'd probably come in as a 6th or 7th year though and you'd have to be a strong candidate for that 6th or 7th year position.
