Loans Forgiven (without asking)

So Navient sends an email advising me that my loans were forgiven. I login to my Navient account (for the first time in 3 years due to Covid cessation of payments) and, sure enough, my balance reads " 0.00 ."

I don't mean to seem ungrateful but, since I never even made a request, can anyone explain how this could have happened?

Have you been making IDR payments for 20/25 years? Did you go to a for-profit school? Did you satisfy PSLF? You shared zero info so any of those three could potentially be the culprit. (Congrats btw)

Wasn't there a more modest loan forgiveness package that focused on specific institutions? Did you attend a school that was covered in that?

It could be they were forgiven, but I would just say they moved around some loans between servicers. For me, I logged into my account and it also has said $0 but then I remembered I had gotten an email about them transferring my account to a new servicer and when I logged into that servicer, my loans were there. Basically search your emails.

This probably isn’t the case given the OP got specifically told the loans were forgiven, though.

The other thing is that there were changes made to retroactively fix problems some borrowers had wrt being on the wrong plan to qualify for PSLF when they should have otherwise qualified. I think the lenders (government?) were proactively going into people’s loans to recalculate the number of qualifying payments if they’d been on the right plans and affirmatively discharging loans for people who qualified? Could be wrong though.
