SA at a biglaw firm—what is the consensus on sending thank you notes (email or handwritten) to mentors/people you worked with at the end of the summer? Would that be viewed as strange?

Emails are standard practice - I kept a running list of people I had connected with and on the final day of summer, I sent all my thank you emails with a CC to my school email, so I would get replies if they sent it after I lost access to my firm email. (It also helps to have a record of all the emails.) Handwritten notes are less of a standard practice but would be appropriate for particularly good mentors, etc.

I recommend sending thank you emails for individuals that you had a meaningful interaction with. I was a mentor for a summer associate, and at the end of the summer, the summer associate did not send me a thank you email despite the fact that I went out of my way to staff them, train them, introduce them to partners, and wrote them a glowing review to help their offer chances. I didn't care that they did not send a thank you letter, but it would have been a nice touch.
