Very strong work experience but very shit grades. Been practicing for a few and thinking of lateraling. Will my grades bite me in the ass? Didnt realize (when I chose tax) how grade selective it is. Any advice?

I don’t think tax is necessarily more grade selective than other practice areas. There’s no way to know what impact your grades might have at various firms until you apply. You managed to get “very strong work experience” so it doesn’t sound like grades have held you back too much thus far.

In any case, the longer you have been practicing the less grades matter. A 2nd year lateral will get a lot more grade scrutiny than a 7th year. Unlikely they would even look at a partner lateral’s grades.

Depends on the firm and how bad they are. If you are around median from a t14 it's not going to be a big deal for most generic biglaw firms after a few years in practice.
