Covington’s Boston Office

Read Covington’s press release about opening a Boston office. Does anyone know how big the office will be or know if it’s a good idea to try to apply to a new office vs a staple like DC or NYC?

Just curious: why would you pick a firm based on the firm itself and not the location?

Presumably they'd like to be in Boston and want to know if Covington would be a good option?

I used to work at Covington. Based on publicly available information, it looks like it’s just a handful of senior lawyers to start. In my experience DC and NY people worked together frequently. I would expect Boston senior lawyers to do the same and just use associates from DC and NY, rather than trying to hire a bunch of associates in Boston.
Maybe Megan Gates will try to poach a few midlevels/seniors from Mintz.

I'm not sure about that since it kind of seems like from the initial post that OP is wondering whether they should apply to Covington Boston, Covington DC, or Covington NYC

I read it as they're in Boston; Covington is opening an office there; they already know that applying to a "staple" office makes sense; and they want to know whether applying to Boston, not a staple office, will be worth it.
(That said, it's also not crazy to pick a firm based on the firm itself and not the location, and this happens a lot with more specialized places, like if you wanted an elite lit boutique or one of the elite plaintiffs' firms. Not sure Covington really falls in that category, but the concept isn't weird.)
