How does a firm view being on a board of directors?

Would being a member of a local board of directors be viewed positively or negatively? On the one hand, the firm can view it as leadership and professional development. Or, they can view that the person is not committed to the view and too busy with outside activities.

Thoughts? Would this benefit someone or hurt them?

Partners are on boards (for- and non-profit) all of the time, and associates are on junior boards of non-profits all of the time. Firm marketing departments love that shit.

Firms don't have a problem with it at all.

You will, however, probably need to disclose it for potential conflict reasons.
