There a list anywhere of recruiters to avoid?

Title. I get a lot of emails and LinkedIn messages and some have jobs that interest me. I don't have any recruiter I'm working with as of yet. I've heard of horror stories about recruiters who unethically spam your resume to firms without your permission and want to avoid that issue.

Amy Kossoris is the worst. Liar, unethical, unprofessional. And notorious in the industry for all of that. Avoid at all costs.

I used a great one who has actual contacts/pull at firms and doesn’t need to cold email. Helped multiple friends too from lower ranked to higher (who eventually made partner). Fwiw focus on who to use and you’ll be fine!

Do you mind sharing who you used? If not, no problem. Also, do recruiters typically focus on one geographical area?

Out of curiosity I went online to look for some other material on this woman and wow, she's got a lot of extremely negative reviews. Yikes.

I appreciate this advice but frankly you can see how it's not particularly helpful without the name? I'm trying to focus on who to use, that's why I came to ask. I'll avoid the one with 1.5 stars on yelp. This guy who contacted me seems good, but I really don't know what to "focus on".

In general, I would avoid:

1) Anybody who cold calls you
2) Anybody without significant contacts in your market. The best ones will personally know the decision makers in the practice group at the firm you are applying to.
3) Anybody who pressures you to send a resume right off the bat without talking to you about your practice and your goals.

The one exception to "cold calls" (although these days, usually more like cold Linked-in contacts), would be firms that are exclusively engaged to fill a position. However, it's fairly rare that such an arrangement would exist for an opportunity available to a mid-level associate. If you are interviewing a potential recruiter, make sure they have a good lay of the land in your practice area/city - they know who the players are AND (most importantly) have placed candidates at those firms before (press them for specifics on that point).

Finally, don't think that a recruiter is the only way to lateral. The easiest way is to leverage contacts you have inside a firm. If you have a law school friend in your practice area at a target firm, your first call should be to them to see if they think there are hiring needs. Most firms would much rather hear from someone who knows you personally than a random recruiter. It's cheaper, and they actually may learn something meaningful about you beyond the dead letter of your resume. Even "friend of a friend" contacts who may know you tangentially can sometimes be better than a recruiter.

Had a pretty great experience with Lori from Momentum! Can't speak to anyone else.
