I heard from a secondhand source that it breaks down into 1900 billable hours, 30 pro bono hours and 120 “other” hours (e.g., training, business development). So, high but not outrageous.

Having said that, Shearman is a bad place to work. Before this announcement, people were arbitrarily not paid bonuses even during the boom, and the firm is known for stealthing juniors. The finance team sounds rough in terms of culture (even high performers are routinely mistreated by certain partners), and almost all their associates had to be brought over from Canada and Australia. Associates who moved from there to K&E NY consider it an improvement, which kinda tells you all you need to know.

Avoid unless you have no other options, or suffer through it for a year or two so you get the experience to lateral elsewhere.
