Moving In-House as a Finance Associate

Post by ThrewItAway152 » Fri Sep 30, 2022 11:44 am

Hi all - to anyone who's moved in-house to a company that's not a bank/investment firm/PE firm, would you mind talking about your journey? Fairly open-ended question, just want to hear about people's experiences.

It was not me, but I had a mentor who worked in finance for 3-5 years at a V100 and moved in-house to a F500 company. Had good hours and decent pay for a few years and now works in-house for a technology company.

From what I understand, he provided specialist support to a fair amount of M&A deals (not exactly sure in what role), and also made sure to diversify his practice to the extent he could. When he interviewed at the F500 company, he emphasized those experiences along with his finance experience, and was generally familiar with some of the basic contracts that were mostly processed in that company. Once he got the job, I believe it was basically a matter of getting up to speed on the kinds of contract terms they liked and then spent a 3-6 years getting experience there before moving onto the more "exciting" role (which also has a bit more upside on the comp).

This is all secondhand, but I believe it is generally accurate.

Good luck!

I was a finance associate in biglaw for 5+ years and moved in-house to a tech company (non-finance legal role). It may take longer to make such switch, but I’m proof that it’s not impossible. Don’t settle on a bank if it’s not where you truly want to move. On your resume and in interviews you should showcase your ability to draft, review and negotiate a wide range of agreements and your ability to learn new areas of law. Good luck!

I'm always happy to read the success stories.

As a 3rd year levfi associate I submitted exactly 54 applications during the spring and summer to a broad variety of roles, including PE shops, fully remote opportunities and hybrid roles in Boston. Turned down one job I'd have taken because they wanted in-person 5x per week. Made it through three rounds at another but lost out. Probably 6-7 screeners total that never went anywhere.

I've stopped applying for this year while I lick my wounds and presume we'll still be getting bonuses. Will try again next year.
