How long do I need to study for the CIPP/US?

Considering switching practice groups/firms to work in IP/Tech Trans. I don't have much IP experience (I've done small projects for the IP group in my firm + some pro bono privacy stuff) so I figured the certification would help show interest on a resume/interview and help me get up to speed on the substance to an extent. How long should I expect to study for? Is it a hard exam?

Anon b/c I have CIPP/US certification.
The exam is weird--its oddly specific to the IAPP textbook, as in they have questions on the test that are completely obscure with answers only found in the book. To study I would basically memorize as much of the book as you can and buy the IAPP practice tests. I took a month to study, reading the book basically over and over again and memorizing as much as I could, then doing the practice questions.

I second the above. I spent about a week full time studying and focused almost entirely on the book with practice tests.

OP here - thanks both. I assume there is no reason to buy the IAPP online training program to prep for the exam?

All you need is the textbook. You can buy the practice exam if you’d like to get a feel for the questions.

Just get the textbook and the practice questions (from IAPP, not some third party source) just to get the feel of the some of the questions.

depends on your knowledge from work and school. the constitutional law section ("what are the three branches of federal government?") are easy as fuck for anyone who was in law school within the last ten years. I knew HIPAA from work so that part was easy for me.
I studied for probably ~4 days of real time, mostly by reading the book and doing practice questions in the sections I knew I had a hard time with (like FERPA and Graham-Leach-Bliley) and I passed. but if you need to learn more sections, it could take more.
Overall it isn't particularly hard but as the others have said, you need to commit certain stupid facts to memory -- like the name of an Asia-Pacific privacy accord that no one follows, for example.
