M&A/Funds tax attorney to something else

Hi all. I’m a 4th year funds tax attorney specializing in fund formation and transactions (acquisitions, dispositions, IPOs, SPACs, etc.). I’d like to move away from transactional tax work and ideally move from NYC to a midsize or smaller firm in NJ. I understand such a move would need to come with a change in practice as the deals I work on wont be coming to smaller NJ firms, and I’m ok with that. I’m thinking about making a switch to estate planning. Do any of you have any recommendations or thoughts? I dont want to start over as a first year associate again but I can’t imagine my funds tax experience would be transferable to any other practice areas at a small non-major market firm. Any and all advice is greatly appreciated!

FWIW, non T14 JD/LLM.

Are you willing to share at which law school you earned your tax llm degree ? (Feel free to PM / DM if you do not want to post publicly.)

Trusts & Estates work is much different than your current transactional work. Essentially, you would be retraining for a new specialization in law.
