Too soon to lateral but wait until Jan for bonus

I have a first round interview on Monday with a firm that I’m seriously interested in. I am on track for 2700 hours this year at my current firm and would hate to miss out on the year end bonus. I also have a big vacation planned late November and would find it weird to start then take a few weeks off immediately.

I know this is ahead of myself, but because it seriously factors into whether I’m interested in the firm I wanted to ask whether given the ordinary interview to offer timeline it would be crazy to get an offer let’s say end of August/beginning of September but ask to start beginning of Jan? Thanks!

Why not just ask the new firm to give you a full non prorated guaranteed eoy bonus? That seems common and probably easier to get than starting several months after receiving an offer. Once you get guaranteed bonus, you can take the vacation as planned, which may raise some eyebrows but at least there wont be any financial repercussions (ie don’t have to worry about hitting hours).

I would try to wait til Jan 1 and collect full bonus from your current firm plus a sign on from the new firm.
