Consensus best cash back card?
I would say Citi Double Cash, accompanied by a rotating categories card like Discover It or Chase Freedom, and/or a special categories (dining, groceries etc.) card. That way you are always earning at least 2% and often more. But if only one, I’d go for Double Cash.

But it’s been years since I applied, maybe there is a reliably 3% card now?

Edited to add: my suggestion above assumes no annual fee for all cards. If you are out to maximize cash back, I think an annual fee card is usually the wrong choice.

If you park at least $100k (cash, IRA, whatever) at Merrill, then the BofA Unlimited Cash Rewards is a flat, unlimited 2.62% cash back on all purchases. Probably the most set-it-and-forget-it option right now.

Amex Blue Cash Preferred if you spend a lot of money on groceries and gas -- annual 6% cash back on first $6,000 and then 1%; 3% back on gas; 3% back on transit (uber/lyft, train tickets, parking, etc.); and 6% back on streaming
