I am in lit, so with a grain of salt (and in no necessary order): Gibson, Kirkland, Sidley, and V&E. Note that these offices aren’t competing with each other for the same work to the extent that their NYC and Houston counterparts are. Dallas is more insular.

For bring trial-focused Houston lit shops who disfavor laterals, these are three very different firms.

Susman is a national lit boutique, whereas the other two are more regional powerhouses (that isn't a knock). AZA is highly leveraged with very tough partnership track, whereas partnership at Susman is comparatively achievable. Gibbs is probably the most lifestyle friendly of the three. It is also the most identifiably "Texan." Susman does work everywhere, having multiple offices. AZA's work is concentrated in Texas, but they don't care about ties at all.

Here are some exaggerated stereotypes:

Susman are weirdos who bill 24/7 but for some reason seem to relish it. Almost cultish. Very tight-knit group of folks. It is not everyone's cup of tea, but it is great experience, and the folks that like it really like it. Many lawyer's least-favorite elite group to litigate against. Most likely to file an emergency motion calculated to ruin opposing counsel's holiday.

AZA are cutthroats whose compass defaults to dollars, such that few familiar with the firm were surprised by this, for instance: https://tinyurl.com/5yyk7f3b. They have lately been working somewhat to rehab that reputation. Separately, a group broke off several years ago to form Kirkland's Houston lit team, including a few HLS folks (Jamie Aycock [now at Yetter], Mark Holden). Most likely to "think creatively" when it comes to what is and is not discoverable.

Gibbs and Bruns are the oldest and the closest thing to "white shoe" by Texas standards. Good Texan folks who practice law as gentlemen should. Academic but also collegial. Very well respected in Texas litigation circles. Most likely to hire several conventionally attractive women as summer associates.
