Did changing markets mean you lost your contacts for bringing in your own clients or is that still a possibility? In my experience it is very difficult to make a case for partnership without some book of business, even a small one but with signs that there is room to grow.

Thanks for the reply. Yes, most of those clients are not portable into the US. I’ve thought of targeting a couple that work internationally, but it’ll be a slow burn (if it comes off at all).

I guess then I would focus my efforts on trying to establish connections here. I have seen a number of talented lawyers get stuck in counsel forever because they spent all their time helping with other people's cases and not enough time developing their own network. It's a tough balance to strike. Where your foreign clients are too can make a difference -- are we talking a big global market or something more regional? Is there any angle you can use to leverage those connections in the US?
