Class of 2023 lucked out
Looking at the large summer classes this summer, it’s pretty clear that the class of 2023 lucked out. Firms were strapped last year and overhired for the 2022 summer programs. Most firms are very reluctant to no-offer anyone (just don’t give them a reason), so despite the over-hiring, summer associates can expect to have jobs come the fall of 2023. Barring a sudden change in the economy, class of 2024 will not find the hiring market nearly as favorable.

As a 1L with a SA, do you think i will be fine from any potential reduction in class size for 2l summer positions?

If the economy tanks they'll be screwed. At least classes of 20/21 got some work experience.

Are we actually that confident that the class of 2023 will get offers? The over-hiring almost seems like a setup for no-offersAnonymous User wrote: ↑Tue May 10, 2022 7:52 pmLooking at the large summer classes this summer, it’s pretty clear that the class of 2023 lucked out. Honest questions whether OP is satire and responders so far have been wooooshed? Read the first sentence of the post three times and tell me I'm wrong? And then the last sentence, which assumes that the "sudden change in the economy" would be toward growth rather than crash? What?

This is a troll thread so I don't care about derailing.
Class of '22 had the worst law school experience ever and I'll die on this useless hill:
-1L switches to online midway into Spring and we're told we're P/F like 3 weeks before finals
-lol at getting anything 1L summer unless you murdered it last fall
-2L fall grades suddenly matter since OCI is pushed to January
-none of the OCI or summer associate wine and dine, just burned retinas from influencer lights between interviews and awkward as fuck Zoom SA events
-3LOL is masked
-now graduate and take the bar and show up in office

I thought a lot of the firms just reduced their summer program to like 2 weeks but still paid SAs for the full 3 months?

That was summer 20 (class of 21). Summer 21 was full but remote or hybrid.legalpotato wrote: ↑Tue May 10, 2022 10:08 pmLOL @ being forced to attend zoom sa events, sounds awful.Anonymous User wrote: ↑Tue May 10, 2022 9:49 pmThis is a troll thread so I don't care about derailing.

Yeah, the majority of '22 SA positions were fully remote unless the office was in TX, DE, etc., or unless you happened to just live closeby the office because a ton of associates/partners were already over it.Anonymous User wrote: ↑Tue May 10, 2022 10:13 pmThat was summer 20 (class of 21). Class of '21 bitched a lot about the bar, but they're the ones that got paid in full for 2-3 weeks of watching videos. Unless they got stiffed by S&C of course.
'21 S&C summers got the most fucked of any SA class in history imo

To be fair, 2L Fall grades boosted my GPA by > 0.2 due to relaxed curves for upperlevel classes. Got into firms that probably wouldn't have given me a second look as a result of the pandemic.Anonymous User wrote: ↑Tue May 10, 2022 9:49 pmThis is a troll thread so I don't care about derailing.

@the above two anons
-the curve response is , but we still had to try like 1Ls for another semester
-boohoo about missing 3LOL when classes were online. We were all required to physically attend classes in 3L with masks which I'd argue is objectively worse than 3LOLing with your camera off

Class of 21 here, 3LOLd with camera off. Fully agree you guys have it worse, experience wise. I did sorta miss half of law school but law school sucks so no loss.Anonymous User wrote: ↑Tue May 10, 2022 10:37 pm@the above two anons

You got to have social events, see your friends, and have an actual graduation. Your other points are fair, but this 3L point is dumb lmaoAnonymous User wrote: ↑Tue May 10, 2022 10:37 pm@the above two anons

‘21 and ‘22 both had awful experiences in different ways. I remember ‘20 complaining a ton about missed graduations etc., but in hindsight they fared by far the best out of all of Covid classes, only missing a couple of months and getting to skip a semester of grades.Anonymous User wrote: ↑Wed May 11, 2022 12:07 amYou got to have social events, see your friends, and have an actual graduation. They will get offers, but a lot will be fired after their first full calendar year of work if there’s a downturn.Anonymous User wrote: ↑Tue May 10, 2022 9:07 pmAre we actually that confident that the class of 2023 will get offers? Correction - S&C made it up to ‘21 by forgiving the $10,000 salary advance paid when they were summers, so effectively the summers got fully paid with no program at all.Anonymous User wrote: ↑Tue May 10, 2022 10:25 pmYeah, the majority of '22 SA positions were fully remote unless the office was in TX, DE, etc., or unless you happened to just live closeby the office because a ton of associates/partners were already over it.Anonymous User wrote: ↑Tue May 10, 2022 10:13 pmThat was summer 20 (class of 21). How so? '21 SAs who were at full-paying, market firms received ~$37K that summer. It sounds like '21 SAs at SullCrom got a $19K stipend + $10K advance (later forgiven) = $29K.Anonymous User wrote: ↑Wed May 11, 2022 9:46 amCorrection - S&C made it up to ‘21 by forgiving the $10,000 salary advance paid when they were summers, so effectively the summers got fully paid with no program at all.
So that was a $7-8K shortfall that summer,** not "fully paid" as you claimed. Methinks if SullCrom associates today were paid $8K below Cravath scale each year, they would be justifiably pissed off.
** In addition to paying its SAs below market, I also heard that the communication from S&C over the course of Spring 2020 was incredibly unhelpful and unprofessional.
