How would you compare the two? For vibes, culture, exit opportunities? In particular thinking about broad transactional work without getting too wrapped up in Boston's life sciences scene, and the potential to eventually transfer offices or lateral to the west coast.

Ropes Boston is far superior to Latham Boston. When you lateral, the other firm will know that.

Interesting point. Would have thought V5 > V20 any day of the week, but there's no denying Ropes is more dominant in Boston.

If you're 100% sure you want to stay in Boston your whole life, go with Ropes. If you think you may ever want to leave, go with Latham.

Go off of chambers band rankings. Vault surveys are meaningless.

Yes, because people outside of Boston will not have heard of Ropes. Also, work at Latham Chicago if you ever dream of leaving the Midwest — do K&E or Sidley if you plan on staying your whole life.

It's pretty undeniable that Latham is the better firm across all practice areas in every city except Boston.

Also, I agree that if you want to stay in the midwest go with Sidley, but go with Latham Chicago if you don't plan on staying in Chicago. Kirkland is on par nationally with Latham so comparison no longer works.

How the hell did we end up on Chicago in a thread about Boston with the potential for west coast????

Subtle troll, but the content is hashed.

People outside of Boston will have never heard of Ropes...

Am I dreaming? I'm on the west coast right now and I work across Ropes all the time, very familiar firm nationwide to people at least in my practice area.

Ropes is a hard culture. Obviously a different time now, but I remember one story I heard where Ropes Boston bought all their associates hotel rooms in hotel adjoining the Prudential (where the offices are) during a bad snowstorm so they wouldn't have any excuse not to show up to the office.

Nickname around the city is Ropes & Chains, but the jury is out as to whether LW is any more humane.

The idea that people outside of specific locations have never heard of V20 firms is frankly silly and very much par for the course for the weirdos on this forum.

You want broad based, so I’d go with Ropes Boston over Latham Boston.
