So, what do I do?

Having one of those “F*** Biglaw” days. What are some realistic post Biglaw options for litigators? I don’t really wanna do in-house, and government pay sucks. Those seem to be the only two exits I hear people mention.

In short, is there happiness out there for any of us?

Look at litigation funding jobs. It's better than in-house litigation and way better paid than gov't work.

Op here. Woah, that’s a new term. What are those? I’m a current mid-level and former fed clerk but can’t say I’ve ever heard of lit funding jobs.

Go to a litigation boutique that is known for having humane hours. Like Patterson Belknap in New York.

Was coming here to say look at boutiques. The hours aren't as good as government hours, but in my experience way better than big law. Also the work can be more interesting depending on your area of litigation.

Yeah, that thought has crossed my mind. The problem is I’m in a non-NYC market where there aren’t as many of those. Still, good point.

What's the typical salary range for a midlevel lateralling to one of these firms?

This, and what does someone actually do in these jobs?

OP, INFO: If you weren't a lawyer, what would you do? Why did you go to law school? What are your hobbies? Sounds cheesy but I'm trying to help you find a job you'd like and enjoy. These answers might be illuminative.

Have you thought about teaching law?

OP here. I appreciate the sincerity. Honestly, I like being a lawyer (and specifically a litigator), but I can’t stand the Biglaw nonsense (pointless deadlines, partners pushing their mistakes onto associates, you get the idea). I’ve thought about adjuncting, since I have something of an education background, but I have no interest in becoming a full-time law professor (I also don’t have the resume for that). Really, I just want to do what I currently do for decent pay but without all the pointless stress.

Smaller markets have better lifestyles. If you’ve ever considered moving to Madison or whatever, you’d probably be competitive and have a better life.

There are thousands of firms. Once you get out of the biglaw paradigm, you can find what you want. I am a lit midlevel who recently left biglaw for a smaller firm. It’s mostly ex-biglaw people, they get sophisticated work, the hours expectation is roughly 1700 (truly), and the money is much better than government options - obviously a pay cut, but not a massive one. They also focus on the specific area of law that interests me. You have to put in some legwork to identify these options, but there are many, many of them out there all across the country.

I know the TLS conventional wisdom is that all biglaw firms are the same, but my honest advice would be to consider a lateral move. There are deadlines everywhere, but not necessarily pointless ones, and I don't think a partner has ever pushed their mistakes onto me, so, again, you might be able to get what you want at a different firm.

That said, much of the stress of biglaw is inherent in the process of doing the type of work well. As in, if it's a big case, you have to have interim deadlines and coordination. But, the things you mention seem partner / team-specific.

Do you really think one person describing a "slight paycut" for a hybrid role answers my question about the salary for a midlevel lateraling to one of these firms? I'm looking for numbers and you're either trolling or incapable of helping.
