Notice when background check is still in process

Have an in house offer that I've accepted but the background check is taking a bit longer than expected. Start date is the last week of this month with a built in 1-week vacation planned. Problem is, results were expected last week and I haven't given notice to my firm, yet, but the plan is to give it as soon as the check is cleared.
Gut and google searches tell me it's best to wait until the background check has provided a full green light. Is that the general consensus on here? Company said they're not worried and don't think we need to push the start date but said they would if I had concerns - considering doing that but welcome thoughts/experience/advice.
I have no reason to be concerned (worst on my record is a parking ticket and I passed C&F w/o issue), but I'm not one to count my chicken's before they hatch. FWIW, I submitted the background check materials before I signed the offer and the night I received the request so the delay is on the vendor (entering week 3). More concerned about Murphy's law and something creating an issue out of nowhere and I'm then out of a job on both ends.
