DC Practice Area Concerns

Is corporate work in DC seen as less competitive for in house roles than if one did corporate work in NYC? I am considering picking a DC office over a NYC office for corporate work and I want to make sure that I am not negatively impacting my career.
As a follow-up, would joining the government practice group force me to stay in DC? I would imagine that there are limited opportunities in government practice groups outside of DC, but I really do not know. I would like to eventually go home, so again just trying to not negatively impact my long-term career.
Sorry if these questions seem over broad, I am first-gen so I really do not have much experience with the difference in practice groups besides my exposure this last summer. Also, my career services department might as well not exist
