Requesting Office Switch (NYC -> DC)

HI everyone,

I am a current 3L who is headed to a V100 (like mid 50's idk if that matters) who has multiple offices all around the country. I summered at the NYC office and absolutely loved it (also got offer to return), but due to some personal circumstances it would be a lot better if I could go to the DC office. I was thinking about asking if I could switch offices, but I do not want to come off as ungrateful for my current offer.

Who do I talk to this about? Is it likely that they will approve? The DC office is fairly big with like ~150 attorneys, but I would like to get a sense of feasibility before asking about the switch.

Also, will it hurt my portability/in house opportunities to pick the DC office over the NYC office when I am intending to do transactional/corporate work. I would like to eventually move home in like 5 years (a small tertiary market) so I want to be aware of any repercussions of making this switch.

Thank you so much for taking the time to read :)

Don't worry about DC vs NYC. Your deal sheet will be probably identical, which is what matters anyway.

As for how to go about doing this, reach out to one of the recruiting coordinators at the firm and signal your interest. They'll let you know how to proceed. Generally firms are pretty good at honoring these requests. Regardless, no use in worrying about the "what if", as it's out of your control anyway.

Don't worry about this because the worst they will tell you is no (which is unlikely anyway). But they aren't going to say "No, and just for asking you can't come to NY either." If they say yes, awesome - if they say no, you can then consider looking elsewhere or just starting in NY and then thinking about lateraling to a DC firm.

Thank you so much, I am glad to hear about the deal sheet thing
