Critical question: are the office snacks and lunch goodies still free?

Re: Kirkland Megathread
Anon because I'm an incoming associate. Just random questions chicago associates:
1. When is the move to the new office coming? How are you all feeling about no privacy in your offices moving forward? Anyone walking by being able to see you through the glass windows... Honestly this gives me anxiety.
2. Any gossip or news on start dates? We were supposed to get them in April.
3. How is morale post the stealth layoffs?
4. Is the new office still going to have a bar?
5. How you doing?

Haha real question, why is Calder the only go to for SP roasting? Is it just that email a couple years ago? I can't imagine he is actually that known by all the KE offices outside of Texas?legalpotato wrote: ↑Tue May 02, 2023 10:45 amLOLAnonymous User wrote: ↑Sat Apr 22, 2023 11:02 amI’m happy about it even as an associate who gains nothing financially. Tired of constantly being told how my firm is on the verge of collapse from over-expansion, is actually secretly shitty, etc. All last year the peanut gallery was declaring confidently that Kirkland was in big financial trouble because they overhired and now that the market cooled, was doomed.Anonymous User wrote: ↑Fri Apr 21, 2023 9:48 pmHow do you all feel about beating Wachtell in PPP? Still waiting to beat them RPL before you celebrate?
Well, now the numbers for that same time period are out, and it turns out they were wrong. Look at the fucking scoreboard, Kirkland is now not only #1 for revenue (which of course is largely a function of size) but also PPEP, beating out a firm that is like 15x smaller and works its associates 50% harder. Where’s all that “Kirkland is actually in financial trouble in 2022” energy now that the numbers are here? Especially funny when most of our peers (aka the firms where the haters work) suffered significant drops in the face of Kirkland’s increases.
Now, of course, the chorus is “well Kirkland is now in financial trouble in Q1 2023” and when the actual numbers get released and prove them wrong, they’ll instead be talking shit about Kirkland in 2024. Ugh.
Look, there are plenty of legitimate things you can criticize Kirkland for. It’s far from perfect. But the firm is really really really good at raking in money and has been putting extreme pressure on the rest of BigLaw for over a decade now financially (to such an extreme degree that the entire rest of the market have had to fundamentally change their business model and even internal operations and compensation policies to try and compete). They hired a bajillion associates and STILL beat all you bitches in both revenue and PPEP, even with that crazy headcount.
You can say that Kirkland are dicks, or that the NSP system sucks, or whatever other critique. But please kindly shut the fuck up about the firm’s financial health and success in business because we are now the clear #1 across all relevant metrics and frankly heralding the demise of Kirkland’s business model in the face of continued record-breaking results just makes you look stupid and jealous.
Dear Anon Associate,
Thank you very much for grinding away your life and soul for us. Unfortunately, I know you have been putting up big hours and you just closed a big deal and were hoping for a little time off, but we are going to need you to drop all of your weekend plans and help us markup this bid draft for a client that just came in today and is due Monday morning. And then after that, we are going to go ahead and stealth you so that we can continue to stay #1 across all financial metrics. After all, Calder's new Aspen mansion is not going to pay for itself.
I know that staying #1 is the most important to you, so your severance will just be the fact that you being laid off is helping us stay at #1.
Best,
Ballis & The Exec Committee

They’re currently building a legit cafe/restaurant and coffee bar (w/ chefs and barista) like they have in NYC, but for now:Anonymous User wrote: ↑Fri May 12, 2023 5:51 pmCan anyone in Houston also do the above for the free food / drinks offered?
Coffee/tea: kegs of cold brew (2 varieties), an extremely expensive italian espresso machine the nobody knows how to use properly, a wide variety of more mundane coffee options like Keurigs and such, and a variety of teas.
Alcohol: 2-3 beers on tap, a half dozen varieties of beer in cans and bottles, rose on tap, liquor cabinets, mixers, full bar, wine & champagne fridge.
Other drinks: fresh squeezed juices, pellegrino, various sodas and sparking waters, spa water w/ fresh fruit.
Snacks: protein bars, kind bars, beef jerky, chips, nuts, popcorn, candy (chocolate bars and M&Ms etc but also things like chocolate covered espresso beans and yogurt-dipped pretzels), fresh fruit, probably more I can’t remember.

Look man I was just referring to their cafeteria options in a lighthearted way lol... But yes our cafeteria sucks ass except for those rice pudding things with the single raisin in them, which for some reason is everything I've ever wanted.Anonymous User wrote: ↑Sat May 13, 2023 12:42 pmYou're at DPW and you're envious of Kirkland? Incoming summer whose grades have steeply declined 2L year. Has any ever heard of the firm revoking a full time offer due to drop in grades?

Any other summers struggling to get assignments? I keep emailing the practice group contacts mentioned in the SA guide but it’s usually to no response. Really making me regret taking this over firms with centralized assignment systems tbh.
Also wtf is this focus on networking with associates? That can’t be a good use of anyone’s time.

The normal purpose of SA programs is to "network" i.e. meet as many people as possible and get integrated socially/culturally into the firm. Whether that's "a good use of anyone's time," reasonable people can disagree—but it's extremely normal in biglaw.

Also, don’t worry about getting work. You’re a summer. There are summers who have billed <40 hours for the entire ten weeks who get return offers just like everyone—and if they spend time meeting people, they’ll be more successful than you at getting work when they come back.

Re: Kirkland Megathread
I was told about it but I didn’t think it would be this networking oriented. I have mild/moderate social anxiety that mostly manifests when I try to reach out to people to ask them for things (see why I avoid networking like the plague), but I can usually control it and people recommended K&E to me because I apparently come off as very gregarious (I’m social chair of a couple things on campus, for example). This hasn’t tended to be an issue for me in the workplace before, but I’ve always been at very small operations by comparison. I really didn’t think it would be a problem.Anonymous User wrote: ↑Tue Jul 11, 2023 4:41 pmIs this somehow a thing you didn’t know about Kirkland?Anonymous User wrote: ↑Tue Jul 11, 2023 4:37 pmI’m in lit tho? Also that last bit was uncalled for. I know I’m anxious and struggle with things all you other people find easy, you don’t have to rub it in.

Re: Kirkland Megathread
The internal networking needed to have a good caseload at KE lit is uncomfortable for most juniors. And my good I mean not only having work, but having the right amount of work and being on cases you enjoy being on with a team you like. It's a big part of life at KE with upsides and downsides, but it won't change when the summer ends and only will become more important.Anonymous User wrote: ↑Tue Jul 11, 2023 4:59 pmI was told about it but I didn’t think it would be this networking oriented. And idk this is the first job I’ve worked where my office has been anywhere close to this big at all, so this whole notion of networking internally for coffees in order to get work just makes no sense and is frankly almost offensive. The Lsat Airbender wrote: ↑Tue Jul 11, 2023 4:29 pmCorp is slow everywhere. Centralized staffing doesn't fix this.Anonymous User wrote: ↑Tue Jul 11, 2023 3:18 pmAny other summers struggling to get assignments?
Also that last bit was uncalled for. I know I’m anxious and struggle with things all you other people find easy, you don’t have to rub it in.

Re: Kirkland Megathread
It doesn’t matter. It’s way more important for you to do good on the stuff you do get assigned than to bill a bunch. You’re a summer, everything is getting written off. They way prefer you to get good feedback on 100 hours than to do terrible on 500.
Recruiting will let you know if there’s an issue. When I was a summer I showed up at 10, left for lunch at 11, came back at 1, and left at like 3 most days. Sometimes I’d go to the gym too.
You’re going to want to be neurotic but resist, enjoy the summer, and do your best when you do get assigned stuff.
Also, literally nobody will remember you from your summer when you start. The only exception would be if you were a mess or a psycho.
