FYI probably also says something about how the partnership feels about you rather than FUCK Kirkland they fucked you. Most in that range were closer to 1.7.

Facebook is not a QoL improvement over Kirkland? What?

As another recent leaver to a peer company I can tell you that the lifestyle difference is immense. My experience wasn’t as bad as what she suggests but even so the difference is night and day. I am not glued to my phone anymore, everything doesn’t require a response in 30 minutes.

Realistically what would happen/how long could I last if I worked 1800-1900 billable hours at Kirkland? Not concerned about making partner or getting a big bonus or any bonus at all.

I like how you think. If the firm really wants us to come back, at a minimum they should tell us that coming in more often will increase our bonus multiplier at year end (and NOT that staying at home would harm our bonuses). Even better than that would be some concrete financial incentive like the very good one you suggest. For $100 a day, I’d come back in at least most business days. Right now I’m planning to come in zero days unless there’s a meeting on a Tue/Wed/Thu, but my teams don’t do many of them.

Also, in the NY office 1st years get their own office w/ a window? Can NY associates confirm? I would have assumed 1st years share a non-window office.

Ok - that makes sense. The chronology of the video was confusing because it was like "I graduated from law school [picture of graduation] then started at a law firm [picture of office]".

Original anon here that mentioned it. Yes partners saw it. From what I hear, most found it ridiculous and funny but a few were pretty annoyed about it. Guessing he was told to take it down. The video was a hype montage of him working at K&E Chicago. Longing looks in the lounge, walk through the lobby, showing the K&E lobby and firm name throughout. Him in his office talking about grinding etc.

I think you could actually last quite a while, at least in the current market. You just have to be really good about saying no and being strategic. Like, I really don’t think anyone would give you shit, let alone fire you, for only billing 1800. But if the hours were uneven and you had a particular month or two with really low hours at the same time everyone at your level was super busy, that could be tricky. Because then it would seem like you’re fucking them over by not taking your share. But if you maintained a steady 150-170 or whatever for most of the year then yeah, bright future.

I imagine this kind of thing is way easier for specialists. In M&A for example, the problem is that each desk you take is a major commitment, and its feast or famine. So you’d be trying to think like how can I do 200-300 hours on each of 7-9 deals throughout the year so that it adds up to ~1800 at the end.

Also worth noting that the firm’s massive attrition makes this hard. Since so many folks leave, there is always a fair share of reallocating workloads where you get calls to help the team out.

All to say, there is a reason people don’t last. Your workload is a constant battle to manage, a feature not a bug of the system btw.
