My firm announced their RTO plans last week and I'm really not interested in going in 3-4 days a week. My options are to either ignore the policy and go in 1-2 days a week as I want, or lateral to a firm that's more flexible w/r/t WFH.

Would I be able to just go in 1-2 days a week? Should I lateral? To where?

Can’t speak to your firm in particular but I would be shocked if anyone makes a serious attempt to force more than 2 days a week back in the office regardless of official policies. Just show up on two of Tuesday-Thursday and you’ll be fine

At my firm, it all depends on your team.

Seriously, just don't go in. If you get called out, say you're not comfortable due to the pandemic (it still exists). If you want to be gutsy, declare you don't see the benefits and want to WFH. I haven't gone in and I'm not going in. If it becomes a big deal, then I will go in, but we are not even remotely close to that point.

By even going in a single day, you're indicating weakness.

Partner: "Why did you go in that day? You're clearly not worried about the pandemic. You clearly cannot WFH completely, otherwise you wouldn't have come in. And the majority has come in 3-4 days, so why make an exception for you?"

You: "umm...yeah...okay. You're right. See you Monday, boss."

That being said, if you're somebody who actually loves being in the office one day out of the week, just do that, and don't say anything about it. In my opinion, you've kind of given up any logical arguments, as declared above, but I doubt they will make a big deal about it. These people have better things to do. In the unlikely case that they do, I guess you can argue that you're special and you deserve more WFH days.
