I will be a summer associate at a V5 this summer, and the firm has asked us to rank our practice areas of interest. I took a Privacy and Data Protection class last semester and enjoyed the heck out of it and was good at it, but the firm did not list its cybersecurity and data protection practice as a selectable option. I’m curious to hear from other lawyers in the field how you broke into the practice area / if you have any tips for someone very interested in the field. Thank you!

How many subgroups are actually listed? At my firm our privacy group is a subgroup of another group, so it wouldn't show up on a list of groups for summer associates to check off as an area of interest (and the group our privacy group is in may not make intuitive sense, either!). I would check your firm's website and find out who the data privacy lawyers are and once you're at the firm, ask how to work with them, and then go from there. If your firm doesn't actually have a dedicated privacy team or isn't doing the work you want, then it may be worth considering whether you should move to another firm, either during 3L OCI (lol) or lateralling after you start.
